  • It is my great honor - as President of the @geosocietyphila - to name @leonmccarron our Explorer of the Year.

I am beyond thrilled that he has chosen Philadelphia for his world premier to present his Tigris Expedition.

Tickets are available to hear about his extraordinary journey and to meet Leon. Link in bio.

Reposted from @leonmccarron I am very honoured to have been named Explorer of the Year by the Geographical Society of Philadelphia!

I will be in Philadelphia on 14th June to speak at the 130th Legacy Event, hosted by PENN Museum. My presentation will be about Iraq, of course, and about the journey along the river Tigris : #ExpeditionDijlah. For those of you in the area, there are tickets available to join us (link in my bio.)

Thank you to all at @geosocietyphila - I’m looking forward to having a platform to speak about all my amazing colleagues here on the river and the trails.

  • Why do I champion #ancientworldwine – those that come from the areas of the world in which wine was first produced, consumed, and commercialized?

Because they are as good and as bad and as varied as wine from the rest of the world. Generally speaking, there are MORE varietals – especially around the grapes’ earliest domestication sites in Georgia/Turkey/Armenia… and both traditional and modern production practices. There are great producers and not-so-great producers. Just like the rest of the wine world.

Because the fact that they were not traded among western european monarchs and thus did not make their way into European histories is meaningless for their worth or quality.

I do not, after all, hold it against French wines that their terroirs were not mentioned in texts of the 18th century BC, though Hilbun and the area between Damascus and the Bekaa, were.

I do not hold it against the Old World that they were such latecomers to the wine party. Fortunately for them, the success of trans-Caucasian wine making eventually spread further West, and I largely thank the #Phoenicians for getting it the final way across the Mediterranean, even though it took about 5000 years.

For the record, of course I like Old World wine. And New World and all worlds in between. But I definitely cringe at the bias against those from the Ancient World, and the wine tastes better to me the richer the ancient soil from which it sprung 😍
