Wine, War, and Resistance

Wine, the seemingly staid and high-browed intoxicant, served as a successful means for both individual dissent and large-scale disruption against Nazi oppression and occupation. From the small acts of defiance, to the larger feats of sabotage, to the outright rebellion of the Resistance and its operations – wine and the people who made it, nurtured it, drank it, and sold it – figured greatly into the progression of the Nazi occupation of France during World War II.

We take as inspiration the book, “Wine and War” by Donald and Petie Kladstrup, and its tales of the remarkable results of the commingling of wine and war during WW II.

The occupation affected the entire country, but we’ll focus on some of the most notable regions – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, Alsace, and Champagne – an the exploits of wine families in those locales, including many prominent names that are still making excellent wine today.

We’ll have wines from these producers, with stories of resistance to tell:

• Hugel , Alsace
• Monmousseau, Loire
• Laurent-Perrier, Champagne
• Chateau Kirwan, Bordeaux
• Domaine Drouhin, Burgundy
