Jill and Phill are joined by the woman with the best name in the wine biz: Michele Alwine of the Wine Merchant! Yes, she is Alwine, all the time. We learn that Michele is a cat whisperer, and today she brings us FOUR, fantastic wines.
First, we have Bonny Doon Vineyards: Le Cigar Blanc and Le Cigar Volant. Randall Grahm is, of course, the original Rhône Ranger and these light-hearted but seriously-composed wines are made with Rhône-happy grapes: Roussanne and Grenache Blanc for the Blanc, and Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault for the Volant. I’ve been a fan of Bonny Doon for years, since my (now) husband and I would share bottles of Le Cigar Volant over dinner in the early 1990s. You know that Phill and I always disagree, so it should come as no surprise that he thinks the Syrah dominates and I think the Grenache does. Listen in to find out with whom Michele agrees! We can all agree that the Cigar Volant would be perfect with fried chicken. The Cigar Blanc is new to me; it is thoroughly enjoyable. Buy a bottle and then listen in as we chat about its fabulous full, smokey, fruity, mineral notes. We learned that its awesome texture is imparted from characteristics of its origin, the Beeswax Vineyard!
Next, we leave California behind and travel on to Italy – specifically, Liguria and Tuscany. We taste a delicious, tangerine-y Pigato from the Italian Riviera where, it turns out, Michele gained a feline following. I adore the Ligurian coast, and this Colle dei Bardellini wine picks up the unmistakeable notes of the sea – along with the areas granitic soils. How to top an amazing Pigato? Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Not much screams spring more than one of these DOCG Vernaccia from Tuscany. Michele recommends this as “cocktail” wine, since it is perfect as an aperitif. Its acidity and minerality also make it a great option for food. Oh, and I think Michele believes in unicorns??? Maybe she just had too much Vernaccia 😉
